Forgotten Canyon, San Rafael Swell, Utah It is not particularly narrow, or very long, or very deep, but Forgotten Canyon (also known as Secret Mesa Canyon) offers a perfect wilderness hike in a remote corner of the San Rafael Swell, itself one of the least visited parts of Utah.

Access is relatively easy. The area is popular with ATV riders but few hike here and so it is easy to find solitude. The scenery is amazing, with towering cliffs and majestic slickrock buttes rivaling the famous formations in Zion National Park. The Swell is a playground for the whole family. With several popular hikes in the region that take you through slot canyons (Little Wild Horse Canyon) to breathtaking vistas (the Wedge Overlook) and in an amongst the goblins in Goblin Valley, this area offers a wide variety of family adventures. Thanks to all the media hype surrounding Ralston's story, this is one of the most popular technical slot canyons in the state. Travelers attempting the full breadth of the canyon need technical and canyoneering skills. However, there are a few sections that non-technical hikers might be able to access. The San Rafael River has carved a deep narrow slot canyon into the heart of the San Rafael Swell. The Coconino sandstone walls are 400 feet high and in places only 25 feet wide. Hiking this canyon involves miles of wading and swimming. Getting through the Lower Black Box is an exciting and entertaining adventure. This popular loop hike takes experienced hikers through two slot canyons. Where Little Wild Horse can be crowded, Ding and Dang Canyons offer solitude and a more challenging trek, and at times require semi-technical scrambling. For the easiest path, climb up Ding Canyon and descend Dang Canyon where you may encounter water up to your knees. At least one hiker was killed Monday afternoon when flash floods ripped through slot canyons in Utah’s San Rafael Swell, prompting a massive search by ground and air for other possible victims.

It overlooks the San Rafael River as it flows through the "Little Grand Canyon." There are about 3 miles of mostly flat hiking trails at the overlook. Little Wild Horse & Bell Canyon loop: This hike is one of the San Rafael’s most popular destinations. It offers hiking in slot canyons with only moderate challenge.
